Pure Product

LABEL: Red Tape Entertainment
Coming up in a city more renowned for its relaxed atmosphere and lazy Sundays, there has been an undeniable insurgency to the Australian hip hop establishment on behalf of Brisbane during days of late. Responsible for much of this noise from north of the border is Pure Product - a three man team of rhyme writers (Tendancee, MARVEL and 4th, plus DJ Butcher) that dip the pen deep into the poison well before taking it to paper.
Whether expressing their dissatisfaction and disdain with the corporate and commercial direction hip hop has taken in recent history (even in this country), or providing picture perfect imagery depicting both the positives and negatives to the lives we lead, all rich in wordplay and delivered with a chilling calm or a firestorm ferocity, depending on the content, this is one
group of vocalists among very few that have learned how to play the game and not the occasion.
And playing the game is something they've been doing – delivering a relentlessness in their live performances normally only seen from
the most verified veterans in the industry - tight mic skills, supplemented by the sort of presence you normally get by throwing a hot toaster in a bath tub, Pure Product have already torn apart stages all around the city in support of such international artists as Yungun (UK), Mystro (UK) and Necro (US). These antics have also seen them support local legends such as The Optimen, Funkoars, Art of War, Mindfield and A Dying Breed.
Citing such artists as Lyrical Commission, Ill Bill, Q-Unique, Jehst, Brothers Stoney, 750 Rebels, L Flows and Verb Ill, Robby Balboa, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Big L, Cage and Nas in their list of influences, with continued performances and future releases from the three MCs, it won't be long before the name Pure Product will be included in the next generation of fire spitters they influence themselves.
While Pure Product have been together for less than two years, they have already achieved an unprecedented amount of attention in this time, prompting many of Brisbane's more established acts and promoters to stop mid-sentence and take notice. Their lyricism has also seen the wider music community pause to take a listen, with the group being named finalists in the Hip Hop category of the 2007 QSong Awards and once again, the crew has secured another nomination this year in 2008.
When they came in to The Method Hip Hop Radio Show on 4-ZzZ (102.1fm) in late 2006, show host K-west (The Optimen/Red Tape Entertainment) got straight onto the phone with fellow Optimen member and label manager Sammsonite to try to explain just what happened - none of which could be included here without a language warning.
In short, K-west was so impressed by the verbal dexterity and deftness between artists (sharing a single boom mic), that they were soon after signed to the local juggernaut label, Red Tape Entertainment.
On June 28th of 2008, Pure Product delivered their first full-length release, Eviction Notice, which within its first week saw the guys pick up their second QSong nomination, and their film clip for their debut single “Keep an Eye Out” was the indie clip of the week on RAGE. The highly anticipated release features production by Sammsonite and DATS (of The Optimen), MARVEL and Dizz as well as guest appearances on the mic by The Optimen, Clinic and Kingskonekted.
In an album that runs the gamut from topical to personal to conceptual, The Eviction Notice will surely solidify Pure Product's position at the frontline of Australian hip hop.
